Influence of music on driver psychology and safety-relevant behaviours: a multi-study inductive content analysis

Underpinned by pragmatism and symbolic interactionism, an inductive content analysis was conducted to assess driving experiences under a variety of music conditions. Many quantitative studies have addressed the effects on drivers, but there has been conspicuous dearth qualitative research provide more nuanced understanding music-related phenomena. Data collection took place over three simulated studies, each with different tasks/participants (Study 1 – n = 34, Study 2 46, 3 27). The two members team peer debriefing third. Findings show that can range affective, behavioural cognitive (both positive negative), are moderated environment (i.e. urban vs. highway) aspects musical stimulus inclusion/non-inclusion lyrics, loudness tempo). Participants were mindful implications in-vehicle vis-à-vis safety–performance–pleasure trade-off. suggested perceived beneficial effect consequent contribution style/safety-related performance.
